Elephant seals are very large marine mammals. They belong to a group called Pinnipedia, which means "fin-footed."

These seals spend about 90% of their lives in the ocean. They dive deep to find food like squid, eels, and sharks. They can hold their breath for over 100 minutes. This is possible because they have a lot of blood. Their blood holds a large amount of oxygen for their dives. They also have large sinuses in their bellies to hold blood.

Male elephant seals have a large nose called a proboscis. This nose helps them make very loud roaring noises. It also works like a rebreather. It helps them save moisture when they are not eating.

To stay warm, they have a thick layer of blubber. Blubber is a layer of fat under the skin. It also helps them move easily through the water. When seals lose their hair, they must rest on land. This is called a haul out.
