They have small ear flaps on the side of their heads. They also have long flippers to help them swim. Unlike some seals, sea lions can walk on all fours.

They have thick, short hair to stay warm. Some sea lions, like the Steller sea lion, are very large.

Sea lions are great at diving deep in the ocean. To save oxygen, they use a trick called bradycardia. This is when their heart rate slows down. This helps their oxygen last longer during a dive. They also slow down their digestion. Digestion uses a lot of power, so they wait until they surface.

Sea lions eat a lot of food at once. They eat about 5% to 8% of their body weight in one meal. They like to eat fish and squid. Some sea lions face danger from tiny pests called parasites. These can make sea lion pups very sick. Warm ocean water can make these pests grow more. This makes it hard for some sea lion groups to grow.
