Eared seals are marine mammals. They belong to a group called otariids. This name comes from a Greek word meaning "little ear." You can see their small ear flaps on the side of their heads. This makes them different from true seals.

These animals live a life between land and sea. They swim and find food in the ocean. Then, they go to land or ice to rest and have babies. They use big front flippers to swim. This helps them move fast in the water. They can also turn their back limbs forward. This lets them walk on all fours on land.

Eared seals eat many things. They like to eat fish, squid, and krill. Krill are tiny, shrimp-like creatures. Sea lions often eat large fish near the shore. Fur seals are smaller. They take long trips to find small prey.

Male eared seals are often much larger than females. Some males, like the Steller sea lion, can weigh over 1,000 kg. They also have larger heads and necks. Most species breed in groups on beaches or rocks.
