Eared seals are amazing marine mammals. They belong to a family called Otariidae. People often call them sea lions or fur seals. This name helps separate them from true seals and walruses. Their name comes from an ancient Greek word for "little ear." This is because they have small ear flaps on their heads.

These animals live a life between the water and the land. They spend much of their time in the ocean to eat and travel. However, they must come to land or ice to rest and have babies. They use large front flippers and strong muscles to swim. This helps them move with great speed and skill. They can also turn their back limbs forward to walk on all fours.

Scientists have studied these animals for a long time. Eared seals first appeared about 15 to 17 million years ago. This was during a time called the Miocene. They likely started in the North Pacific Ocean. Later, they moved into the Southern Hemisphere where most live now. The oldest fossil found was named Eotaria crypta in southern California.

There are many different kinds of eared seals. Most live in the Pacific, Atlantic, or Indian Oceans. Some are very small, like the Galápagos fur seal. Others are huge, like the Steller sea lion. A male Steller sea lion can weigh over 1,000 kg. Males are often much larger than females. They have bigger heads, necks, and chests too.

Eared seals are carnivores, which means they eat meat. They love to eat fish, squid, and krill. Sea lions usually stay near the shore to find large fish. Fur seals are smaller and take longer trips to find small prey. Most species gather on beaches or rocks to breed every year. The New Zealand sea lion is special because mothers move into forests to protect their pups.
