These treats began in Guangzhou. Chefs there were inspired by English custard tarts. They made new items to attract customers. One kind used a flaky puff pastry. The filling was like a steamed egg pudding.

In Hong Kong, egg tarts became very popular. In the 1960s, local cafes began to serve them. These tarts are often small. People might eat them in groups of two or three. Some tarts even have flavors like green tea or chocolate. Making these tarts is a special skill. It is even part of a heritage list in Hong Kong.

There is another kind from Macau. This style comes from a Portuguese tart called pastel de nata.

Macau-style tarts have a brown, caramelized top. A bakery called Lord Stow's helped make them famous. Later, the recipe spread to other places like Singapore. You can find egg tarts in many shops today. They are a joy to eat at dim sum meals.
