He wrote stories that people performed on stage. His work helped change American theater in the 1960s. Some people call his style the Theater of the Absurd. This style often uses strange ideas to look at life. He was known for writing very sharp dialogue. His plays often looked closely at how people live today. He was considered a top writer of his generation.

Albee’s writing changed through three different periods. His early plays, from 1959 to 1966, often felt like intense fights. These stories sometimes challenged how people viewed marriage. His middle period, from 1971 to 1987, focused on different themes. During this time, he often performed in Europe or regional theaters. His later plays, from 1991 to 2016, were a big comeback. These works were watched by many appreciative audiences around the world.

Albee had a very busy life as a student. He went to several different schools in New York and New Jersey. He also attended the Lawrenceville School and Valley Forge Military Academy. He later graduated from The Choate School in 1946. Before he was a famous playwright, he wrote many other things. In 1946, he published nine poems and eleven short stories. He even wrote a very long novel called The Flesh of Unbelievers.

His career was full of great success and big prizes.

It gives writers and artists a quiet space to work. He also spent time teaching playwriting at the University of Houston. Albee passed away in 2016 at the age of 88.
