Pinter's stories often had a very special feeling. Early in his career, critics called his work a "comedy of menace." This means his plays could be funny but also felt a bit scary or tense. Later, he wrote what people called "memory plays." These stories focused on how people remember the past. Some of his most famous plays include The Birthday Party from 1957 and Betrayal from 1978. He also wrote many scripts for films, such as The Servant in 1963.

Before he was a great writer, Pinter lived a very busy life. He was born in Hackney, East London, in 1930. As a young man, he worked many different jobs to earn money. He worked as a waiter, a postman, and even a snow-clearer. He also worked as a bouncer at clubs. He spent about 12 years working as an actor in regional theater. During this time, he sometimes used the stage name David Baron.

Sports were also a huge part of Pinter's life. He was a very fast runner in school and broke a sprinting record. He was also a huge fan of cricket. He loved the game so much that he even took his cricket bat with him when he was moved to the countryside during the Blitz. He once said that cricket felt like a bold theater of action. He even served as the chairman of the Gaieties Cricket Club.
