He wrote plays for the stage and scripts for movies. He also worked as an actor and a stage manager. Osborne changed how people thought about theatre in the years after World War II. His work helped start a new way of storytelling called kitchen sink realism. These plays used everyday homes as settings to show real life. This style helped people talk about how society was changing in Britain.

Osborne became famous with his play Look Back in Anger in 1956. He wrote this play in only 17 days. He sat in a deck chair on Morecambe pier to do the work. The play was based on his own difficult marriage to Pamela Lane. Many people called him an "angry young man" because of his writing. This name described writers who came from the working class. His plays often showed the feelings of people living in a changing world.

Osborne's life began in London on December 12, 1929. His father, Thomas, was a commercial artist and copywriter. His mother, Nellie, worked as a barmaid. When Osborne was a young boy, his family moved to Stoneleigh in Surrey. He later went to a school in Devon called Belmont College. He left that school in 1945 after a fight with other students. Before he became a famous writer, he worked as a journalist and a stage manager.

He won many famous awards for his talent. His play Luther won a Tony Award in 1964. He also won an Oscar for his movie script for Tom Jones in 1963. He even won a BAFTA Award for his writing. Osborne helped start a film company called Woodfall Film Productions in 1958. This company helped create the British New Wave in movies. He worked with director Tony Richardson to make many important films.

Osborne's work connects to the history of modern movies and plays. He moved from writing for the stage to writing for television and film. Some of his plays even helped change rules about what could be shown in theatres. In his later years, he lived in a quiet place called Shropshire. He wrote two books about his own life. Osborne died on December 24, 1994, at the age of 65. His stories still matter to people who study theatre today.
