He was born on February 20, 1943, in Hertfordshire, England. His father, Alfred Abraham Leigh, was a doctor. Leigh grew up in the Salford area of Lancashire. His family had Jewish roots, as his grandparents moved from Russia to Manchester. This background is a part of who he is as an artist. He has spent his life telling stories about real people and their lives.

Leigh has a very unique way of making his art. He does not start with a finished script. Instead, he uses a long process of rehearsals and improvisation. Improvisation is when actors act out scenes without a set script.

He talks with his actors to help them build their own characters. They work together to find real relationships between the people in the story. Once they have found the story, Leigh writes a structure. He uses simple sentences to show the order of the scenes. Then, they rehearse many times to make the work feel perfect.

Leigh studied at many different schools to learn his craft. He went to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, which is also called RADA. He also attended the Camberwell School of Art and the London School of Film Technique.

In the early 1960s, he worked as an actor in small roles. He even played a silent character in a BBC show called Maigret. Later, he began making plays for television in the 1970s. He wanted to move from the stage to the big screen. He eventually started his own company called Thin Man Films in 1988.

His career is full of important names and big prizes. He has won awards at the Cannes, Berlin, and Venice film festivals.

Leigh has won three BAFTA Awards for his work. He also received an OBE, which is an honor for his services to film. He has been nominated for seven Academy Awards. Some of his famous films include Secrets & Lies and Vera Drake. He also made the movie Mr. Turner in 2014. His plays, like Abigail's Party, are also very well known.

Leigh's work connects to the world we see every day. He likes to show the lives of working-class people.

His films often feel very honest and emotional. He wants to capture the way people truly live and feel. Some of his stories are funny, while others are more serious. By using real feelings, he makes his movies feel like they are happening right in front of us. He shows us the beauty and the hard parts of being human. This is why people have loved his stories for so many years.
