A safety is a player who plays in the back of the defense. Reed spent most of his career playing for the Baltimore Ravens. Many fans called him a "ball hawk" because he was so good at catching the ball. He had a special skill for luring quarterbacks into making mistakes. He would trick them into throwing passes that he could catch. This helped his team take control of the game.

Reed used a very smart way to play the game. He spent a lot of time studying film to learn how other teams worked. This helped him memorize the tendencies of his opponents. When he was on the field, he could predict where the ball would go. He was famous for his interceptions, which are when a defender catches a pass meant for the other team. He even set an NFL record for the longest interception returns. One return went 106 yards in 2004, and another went 107 yards in 2008.

He went to Destrehan High School, where he was a star in football and track and field. He was a member of a state champion relay squad in track. Later, he went to the University of Miami. He played for the Miami Hurricanes from 1997 to 2001. During his college years, he helped his team win the 2001 National Championship.
