Joe Greene was one of the most famous football players in history. He played as a defensive tackle for the Pittsburgh Steelers in the National Football League. This means he stood on the line to stop the other team from moving forward. He was known for being a fierce leader and a very strong competitor. Because he played with such an intense style, people gave him a nickname. They called him "Mean" Joe Greene.

He wanted people to remember him as a great player who helped his team win. He did not want the nickname to make people think he was a mean person.

Greene used many skills to win games on the field. He was very fast and could move quickly to catch players. He also had the strength to overpower the men trying to block him. In 1974, he even created a new way to play called the "stunt 4-3." He would line up at a sharp angle to confuse the other team. This trick made it very hard for them to block his moves. This special way of playing helped his team win a big game against the Buffalo Bills.
