A safety is a defensive player who typically plays in the backfield to protect against long passes. Reed was famous for his ability to play the position with extreme intelligence. Many fans and experts called him a "ball hawk" during his prime years. This nickname described his uncanny ability to intercept passes meant for the opposing team. He did not just rely on speed or strength to succeed on the field. Instead, he used a deep understanding of the game to dominate his opponents.

Reed's success relied on a specific mental process involving the study of film. He spent countless hours watching video of opposing teams to memorize their tendencies. By analyzing these patterns, he could predict where a quarterback might throw the ball. He often used this knowledge to lure quarterbacks into making mistakes. This tactical approach allowed him to intercept the ball and create scoring opportunities for his team.

His ability to read the field made him a constant threat to any offense he faced.

His athletic journey began at Destrehan High School in Louisiana. Reed was a standout performer in both football and track and field. In football, he was an all-state selection and the district's most valuable defensive player. He also excelled in track, where he was a member of a state champion 4 × 100 meters relay squad. He set a high school record in the javelin throw and was a strong competitor in the long jump and triple jump.

During his college career, he set school records with 21 career interceptions and 389 interception return yards.

In 2002, the Baltimore Ravens selected Reed in the first round of the NFL draft. He spent the majority of his 11-season career with the Ravens before playing for the Houston Texans and New York Jets in 2013. His professional career was marked by incredible statistical achievements and individual honors. In 2004, he was named the NFL Defensive Player of the Year by the Associated Press.
