To become a great player, Ray worked very hard starting as a young boy. He grew up in Florida and helped take care of his four younger siblings. He wanted to be strong enough to protect his mother from a mean stepfather. To build strength, he used a deck of 52 playing cards for his push-up exercises. This is why he chose to wear the number 52 on his jersey. He also became a state champion in wrestling during high school. This hard work helped him succeed when he went to college.

Ray played college football for the Miami Hurricanes before joining the pros. He was a star player and earned All-American honors there. In 1996, the Baltimore Ravens chose him in the first round of the NFL draft. He was one of the very first players on the team. During his time with the Ravens, he became a great leader. He led the team in tackles 14 different times. He was a key part of the team from its very first season.

His career was filled with many big wins and special awards. In the year 2000, his defense was one of the best ever seen. They set a record by allowing only 165 points in a single season. That year, the Ravens won Super Bowl XXXV. Ray was named the Most Valuable Player for that big game. He also won the Defensive Player of the Year award twice.

Even after a triceps tear in 2012, he returned to help the Ravens win another Super Bowl. In 2018, he was selected for the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
