Economics is a social science that studies how societies produce, distribute, and consume goods and services.

It examines the behavior of economic agents and how various economies function. The field is broadly divided into two main branches: microeconomics and macroeconomics. Microeconomics focuses on the basic elements of an economy. This includes individual agents like households, firms, buyers, and sellers. It analyzes how these agents interact within markets and the outcomes of those interactions.

Macroeconomics takes a much broader view of the world. It analyzes economies as large, interconnected systems. This branch looks at how production, distribution, consumption, savings, and investment expenditure interact. It also examines factors of production, which include labor, capital, land, and enterprise. Macroeconomists study large-scale phenomena like inflation, economic growth, and public policies. They also seek to describe and analyze the global economy.

Within the field, economists use different frameworks to approach their work. Positive economics focuses on describing "what is" through factual observation. In contrast, normative economics involves advocating for "what ought to be" based on values. There are also distinctions between economic theory and applied economics. Some scholars focus on rational economics, while others study behavioral economics. Finally, the field is split between mainstream economics and heterodox economics.

The history of economic thought began long before the modern term existed. The word "economics" comes from the Ancient Greek term oikonomia. This term refers to the "way to run a household." Originally, it described the skills of an oikonomikos, or a household manager. For many centuries, the discipline was known as "political economy." Early thinkers like Aristotle discussed economic concepts such as use value and exchange value. In the 16th and 17th centuries, scholastic writers began developing theories regarding money, interest, and value.

Two major groups shaped the era before modern economics emerged. The mercantilists flourished from the 16th to the 18th century. They believed a nation's wealth depended on accumulating gold and silver. They encouraged exporting goods while restricting imports through protective tariffs. Later, the physiocrats emerged in 18th-century France. They viewed the economy as a circular flow of income and output. Physiocrats believed only agricultural production created a true surplus. They advocated for laissez-faire, which means minimal government intervention in the economy.

A turning point occurred in 1776 with the publication of Adam Smith's "The Wealth of Nations." This work is often called the birth of economics as a separate discipline. Smith identified land, labor, and capital as the three essential factors of production. He argued that specialization, or the division of labor, increases productivity. He also proposed that under competition, resource owners seek the most profitable uses for their assets. This leads to an equilibrium where resources are allocated efficiently.

In the 20th century, definitions of economics evolved significantly. Lionel Robbins proposed a highly influential definition in 1932. He described economics as the study of human behavior regarding scarce means. These means have alternative uses and are used to reach specific ends. This definition shifted the focus from just studying wealth to studying the choice process itself. This allows economics to be applied to diverse subjects like war or crime. Even if a subject is not about money, it involves using scarce resources to reach a goal.

Today, economic analysis is applied to almost every part of human society. It is used in business, finance, and government to make decisions. It also helps in fields like cybersecurity, health care, and engineering. Experts apply economic principles to study social institutions, education, and the law. It even provides tools to analyze the environment, science, and politics. By understanding how people make choices under scarcity, economics helps us navigate a complex world.
