Ecology is the natural science of relationships between living organisms and their environment.

It is a major branch of biology. Scientists use it to study the abundance, biomass, and distribution of life. Ecology examines life processes, interactions, and adaptations. It also tracks the movement of energy and materials through living communities. This science helps us understand how ecosystems develop over time. It also looks at how species cooperate, compete, or engage in predation.

Ecosystems are the fundamental units of ecological study. They are dynamically interacting systems. They consist of living organisms and the non-living, or abiotic, components of their environment. These systems use processes like primary production and nutrient cycling to regulate energy. They also use niche construction to manage their surroundings. Ecosystems provide vital ecosystem services. These include biomass production for food, fuel, and medicine. They also regulate climate and perform water filtration. They provide soil formation, erosion control, and flood protection.

To manage these complex studies, ecologists use a hierarchy of organization. This scale ranges from individual organisms to many larger levels. It begins with the organism and moves to the population. From there, it includes guilds, communities, and ecosystems. Even larger units are biomes, which categorize regions by vegetation. The largest scale is the biosphere, the sum of all ecosystems on Earth.

This hierarchy forms a panarchy. This means it exhibits non-linear behaviors. Small changes to critical variables can cause disproportionate, irreversible changes. For example, changing the number of nitrogen fixers can alter the entire system.

Ecologists study different scales using specific subdisciplines. Population ecology focuses on the distribution and abundance of organisms. A population consists of individuals of the same species. They live, interact, and migrate through the same niche and habitat. In contrast, ecosystem ecology focuses on the flux of materials and energy. The study of niches is also central to the field. A niche is the set of biotic and abiotic conditions for a species. The fundamental niche is the set of conditions where a species can persist. The realized niche includes those plus the ecological conditions where it actually lives.

History shows how our understanding of these systems has grown. The term ecology comes from the Greek words "oikos" and "logia." These words mean "house" and "study." The German scientist Ernst Haeckel coined the term in 1866.

Modern ecology as we know it began in the 1890s. This was driven by a group of American botanists. Modern theory relies heavily on evolutionary concepts. These include adaptation and natural selection. These concepts help explain how organisms fit into their environments.

Biodiversity is a key concept across all ecological levels. It describes the variety of life from genes to ecosystems. It includes species diversity, ecosystem diversity, and genetic diversity. Biodiversity is essential for maintaining ecosystem services. These services improve human quality of life. Biodiversity is influenced by environmental conditions and human management. Understanding biodiversity helps conservation planners. It allows them to make recommendations to governments and industries. It also helps protect species migration, such as riverine fish runs.

Organisms do not just live in environments; they change them. This is known as niche construction. Organisms modify their habitats through regulatory feedback. This can happen on local scales, like a beaver pond. It can also happen on global scales. Ecosystem engineers are organisms that cause physical changes to materials. They modulate resource availability for other species. This allows them to modify, maintain, and create habitats.

Even the planetary atmosphere is affected by biology. The flux of gases from respiration and photosynthesis affects CO2 and O2 levels. Some theories, like the Gaia hypothesis, suggest life regulates the Earth's temperature. This creates a self-regulating range of tolerance for the whole planet.
