Economic security

society Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Economic security is the feeling of being safe with money. It means having a steady income to live on. This helps you pay for things you need right now. It also helps you plan for the future. People want to know their money will last a long time. This is called solvency. Without this feeling, people might feel a lot of anxiety.

For many people, security depends on different things. Families often look for job security to stay safe. In the United States, children feel secure when their families have steady work. People over 50 years old have different needs. They often rely on Social Security benefits or pensions. They also use their savings and health insurance. These tools help them live well as they get older.

Governments also work to help people stay secure. In 1972, Arizona created a Department of Economic Security. This group helps children, adults, and families. They joined many smaller offices into one big department. This was done to save money and work better. Minnesota did something similar in 1977. They formed a department to help with jobs and poverty. Later, in 2003, they merged two departments together.

Countries also care about national economic security. This is the ability of a nation to grow its economy. In the past, some nations grew rich by taking things from others. Today, the world uses a system of international trade. This means countries depend on each other for goods. Having natural resources is very important for this. Some experts say this is as vital as a strong military.

Recently, many leaders have focused on these big ideas. In 2021, Japan created a new job for economic security. In 2023, Japan and Germany agreed to work together. They wanted to protect their supply chains. A supply chain is the path goods take to reach you. In 2023, the G7 leaders also met to talk about resilience. This means being able to bounce back from hard times.
