Economic security

society Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Economic security is the condition of having stable resources to support a standard of living. This includes having a steady income for current needs and the foreseeable future. It also involves solvency, which is the predictability of future cash flow for a person or an entity. Without this stability, people may experience economic insecurity and economic anxiety. While financial security often focuses on individual or family money management, economic security is broader. It includes a society's production levels and how it supports citizens who are not working.

Individual economic security is built through several specific components. For children in the United States, security depends on family income and job security. For people over 50, the focus shifts to different resources. These include Social Security benefits, pensions, and personal savings. Health insurance coverage also plays a vital role for this age group. These elements work together to ensure that people can meet their basic needs throughout different stages of life.

Governments often create specialized departments to manage these complex systems. In 1972, Arizona formed the Department of Economic Security. This department combined many different state activities into one group. It merged the Employment Security Commission, the State Department of Public Welfare, and several other offices. The goal was to integrate services and reduce the duplication of administrative costs. In 1974, the State Department of Mental Retardation joined this department. Later, in January 2007, Family Connections also became part of the group.

Minnesota followed a similar path to organize its economic support. The Minnesota Department of Economic Security was formed in 1977. It brought together the departments of Employment Services and Vocational Rehabilitation. It also included the Governor's Manpower Office and the Economic Opportunity Office. In 1985, the department added State Services for the Blind. By 2003, Minnesota merged this group with the Department of Trade and Economic Development. This new organization is called the Department of Employment and Economic Development.

On a larger scale, national economic security involves a country's ability to follow its own policies. A nation wants to develop its economy in a specific, desired manner. In the past, some nations achieved wealth through conquest and plunder. They gained access to new resources and controlled the economies of others. Today, the world uses a system of international trade. This system relies on multi-national agreements and mutual interdependence between different countries.

Modern national security now includes economic factors alongside military policy. Experts believe that having natural resources and production capacity is essential. Economic security is often linked to the geopolitics of petroleum. This became very clear after the 1973 oil crisis and the events of September 11, 2001. In Canada, one major threat is economic espionage. This is illegal activity by a foreign government to gain unauthorized access to economic intelligence. This intelligence can include proprietary technology or sensitive information.

Recently, many nations have taken new steps to protect their economic interests. In 2021, Japan created its first-ever ministerial post for economic security. That same year, the United States issued a plan to counter threats from China. In 2022, Japan passed a bill to guard technology and reinforce critical supply chains. These supply chains are the networks used to move goods. In 2023, Germany and Japan agreed to cooperate to reduce dependence on imports for raw materials. This cooperation followed tensions regarding global supply chains and the invasion of Ukraine.

Global leaders are also working together through groups like the G7. In April 2023, G7 Trade Ministers met to discuss enhancing economic security. Later that year, the G7 discussed economic resilience at the Hiroshima summit. This concept of resilience helps economies bounce back from disruptions. In December 2025, the United States announced the Pax Silica initiative. This program aims to strengthen trusted supply chains for advanced technologies. By building strong economic ties, nations hope to increase their overall national security.
