Earth's rotation

earth science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Earth spins around on an axis. An axis is an imaginary line through the center.

The North Pole and South Pole are the ends of this line. Earth spins toward the east. This spin takes about 24 hours.

This creates day and night.

Earth's spin is not always the same. The Moon's pull on the oceans slows the spin down. This means days were shorter a long time ago. In 2020, Earth began to spin faster again. This change might come from the oceans or the air. Melting ice can also change how fast Earth spins. When ice melts, mass moves closer to the center. This makes the planet spin faster.

Not all parts of Earth move at the same speed. The equator is the middle of the Earth. It is the widest part. Speed is highest at the equator. Speed gets lower as you move toward the poles. At the very poles, the speed is zero.
