Before his presidency, he was a General of the Army. He held the massive role of Supreme Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Force in Europe. Eisenhower is remembered for his military strategy and his leadership during the Cold War. His decisions shaped how the United States interacted with the world for many decades.

Eisenhower's military career involved managing complex, large-scale operations. During World War II, he supervised two very important campaigns. First, he planned Operation Torch, which was the North Africa campaign from 1942 to 1943.

These operations required coordinating many different armies and countries. He moved troops and supplies across oceans to fight against Axis powers.

After World War II ended in Europe, Eisenhower held several high-level positions. In 1945, he served as the military governor of the American-occupied zone of Germany.

He then became the Army Chief of Staff from 1945 to 1948. In 1948, he left the military to serve as the president of Columbia University. Finally, he became the very first supreme commander of NATO, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, from 1951 to 1952. These roles prepared him for the presidency.

Eisenhower entered the presidential race in 1952 as a Republican.

His presidency focused on two main goals. He wanted to contain the spread of communism and reduce federal deficits. He used a strategy called "New Look" to prioritize nuclear weapons over expensive Army divisions.

His administration dealt with many global crises and intense political moments. In 1953, he considered using nuclear weapons to end the Korean War. This pressure helped lead to an armistice, which remains in effect today. During the 1956 Suez Crisis, he condemned the invasion of Egypt by Israel, Britain, and France. He successfully forced those nations to withdraw.

He also dealt with the Soviet invasion of Hungary in 1956, though he took no direct action there. In 1958, he deployed 15,000 soldiers to handle the Lebanon crisis.

At home, Eisenhower oversaw massive changes to American life and infrastructure. He supported the development of the Interstate Highway System. This project remains the largest construction of roadways in American history.

When the Soviet Union launched the Sputnik satellite in 1957, he led the American response. This led to the creation of NASA and the National Defense Education Act. He also signed the Civil Rights Act of 1957. He even sent Army troops to Little Rock, Arkansas, to ensure schools were integrated according to federal court orders.

Eisenhower's life began in a modest way in Denison, Texas, in 1890.

His family later moved to Abilene, Kansas, which he called his hometown. His father was an engineer, and his mother was a Jehovah's Witness. Eisenhower graduated from West Point in 1915.
