John Foster Dulles was a prominent American diplomat, lawyer, and politician. He served as the United States Secretary of State from 1953 until 1959. Dulles came from a family with deep ties to American government. His grandfather, John W. Foster, served as Secretary of State. His uncle, Robert Lansing, also held that high office. Even his brother, Allen Dulles, became a powerful leader as the director of central intelligence.

His early life was shaped by religion and private study. He was born in Washington, D.C., on February 25, 1888. His parents chose to homeschool him and his siblings. He later attended Princeton University, graduating in 1908. After law school, he joined the firm Sullivan & Cromwell. There, he specialized in international law and finance.

In the years following World War I, Dulles worked on several major global issues. He served as legal counsel at the Versailles Peace Conference in 1919. He also helped design the Dawes Plan. This plan used American loans to help stabilize Europe by reducing German war reparations. In the 1920s, he helped manage about one billion dollars in these loans.

During World War II, Dulles focused on planning for a peaceful future. He worked with the Federal Council of Churches on a vision for world order. This work helped build support for the creation of the United Nations. He even helped draft the preamble to the United Nations Charter. Later, as an advisor to President Harry S. Truman, he helped write the Treaty of San Francisco. This treaty formally ended World War II in the Pacific.

As Secretary of State, Dulles used a strategy called massive retaliation. This meant the U.S. would respond strongly to Soviet aggression. He focused heavily on building security alliances to contain communism. He strengthened NATO and helped create the Southeast Asia Treaty Organization. He also established the U.S.–Japan Security Treaty and the ANZUS treaty with Australia and New Zealand.

Dulles's career also involved controversial actions in other nations. He helped instigate coup d'états in Iran in 1953 and Guatemala in 1954. In Indochina, he supported the French and backed South Vietnam after the 1954 Geneva Conference. While he once worried about the power of nuclear weapons, the Cold War changed his views. He eventually believed that the threat of such weapons was necessary to stop communist expansion.

John Foster Dulles resigned from his position in 1959 due to cancer. He died shortly after his resignation. His legacy remains visible in the international alliances that still exist today. His name is also honored by the Dulles International Airport in Virginia. His life shows how legal and diplomatic expertise can shape global power structures.
