Kennedy was born on May 29, 1917, in Brookline, Massachusetts. His father, Joseph P. Kennedy Sr., was a businessman and politician. His mother, Rose Kennedy, was a philanthropist and socialite. His family had strong ties to Irish immigrant history. His grandparents were both involved in Massachusetts politics. This background provided him with early exposure to political discussions. His father emphasized academic achievement and high ambition for his children.

Before entering politics, Kennedy served in the U.S. Naval Reserve during World War II. He joined the service in 1941. He eventually commanded a patrol torpedo boat known as PT-109. In August 1943, his boat was involved in a collision in the South Pacific. Kennedy survived the sinking and helped rescue his fellow sailors.

This bravery earned him the Navy and Marine Corps Medal. However, the event also caused serious injuries that lasted his whole life.

Kennedy's political career began in the U.S. House of Representatives. He represented a working-class district in Boston from 1947 to 1953. Later, he served as a U.S. Senator from Massachusetts from 1953 to 1960. During his time in the Senate, he wrote a book titled *Profiles in Courage*. This work earned him the Pulitzer Prize.

Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson assumed the presidency immediately after. Lee Harvey Oswald was arrested for the crime, but he was killed two days later. While the Warren Commission concluded Oswald acted alone, many conspiracy theories remain. Following his death, Congress passed major laws like the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Kennedy remains a highly ranked president in historical polls.
