He served from 1974 to 1977 as a member of the Republican Party. Ford is a unique figure in American history. He is the only person to serve as president without winning an election for president or vice president. He assumed the presidency following the resignation of Richard Nixon.

Before this, he served as the 40th vice president from 1973 to 1974. He took this role after Spiro Agnew resigned. His rise to power was made possible by the 25th Amendment. This amendment changed how vacancies in the vice presidency are filled.

Ford's early life was marked by significant family changes. He was born Leslie Lynch King Jr. on July 14, 1913, in Omaha, Nebraska.

His parents, Dorothy Ayer Gardner and Leslie Lynch King Sr., separated just sixteen days after his birth. His mother eventually moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan. She later married Gerald Rudolff Ford, a salesman. Although he was not formally adopted, the boy was known as Gerald Ford Jr. His name change was formalized on December 3, 1935. As a young man, Ford was highly active in the Boy Scouts of America. He earned the rank of Eagle Scout in August 1927. He remains the only Eagle Scout to reach the presidency.

Athletics played a major role in Ford's development at the University of Michigan. He played as a center and linebacker for the Wolverines football team.

He helped the team achieve two undefeated seasons and national titles in 1932 and 1933. During a difficult 1934 season, Ford was still considered the team's star player. He once faced a controversy involving a Black player named Willis Ward. Georgia Tech refused to play Michigan if Ward participated. Ford was Ward's roommate and best friend. Although he initially threatened to quit, he played after Ward asked him to. Ford later graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics in 1935.

After college, Ford pursued a career in law and military service. He worked as a football coach at Yale University while attending Yale Law School.

Following the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, he joined the U.S. Naval Reserve. He served as an instructor at a Preflight School in North Carolina. Later, he saw sea duty on the aircraft carrier USS Monterey. He served on this ship from June 1943 until December 1944. During this time, the carrier participated in many actions in the Pacific Theater. Ford held roles such as assistant navigator and antiaircraft battery officer. He was promoted to the rank of lieutenant during his service.

Ford entered politics through the U.S. House of Representatives. He was elected in 1948 from Michigan's 5th congressional district.

He served in the House for nearly 25 years. For the final nine years of that period, he served as the House minority leader. During his time in the House, he also served on the Warren Commission. This commission investigated the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.

His long legislative career provided the foundation for his eventual leadership of the nation.

His presidency was defined by difficult economic and political challenges. Domestically, Ford managed the worst economy since the Great Depression. The country faced growing inflation and a recession. One of his most controversial decisions was a presidential pardon for Richard Nixon. This pardon addressed Nixon's role in the Watergate scandal. In foreign policy, Ford worked toward détente, which means a relaxation of tensions, during the Cold War.

He signed the Helsinki Accords to help achieve this goal. His term also saw the end of U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War. Eight months into his term, South Vietnam collapsed.

Ford ran for re-election in 1976. He narrowly defeated Ronald Reagan in the Republican primary for the nomination.

Despite this loss, Ford and Carter later developed a close friendship. Ford remained active in the Republican Party for many years. He held moderate views that sometimes clashed with conservatives in the 1990s. He died in Rancho Mirage, California, in 2006. While historians sometimes rank him as a below-average president, public polls of his time in office have been more positive.
