Carter was born on October 1, 1924, in Plains, Georgia. He was the first U.S. president born in a hospital. His family was involved in farming and local business. His father ran a general store and invested in farmland. Growing up, Carter was an enterprising teenager. He managed an acre of farmland to grow and sell peanuts. This early experience with business and agriculture shaped his later life. After high school, he pursued a career in the military.

Carter attended the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. He graduated in 1946 with a Bachelor of Science degree. He was commissioned as an ensign and joined the submarine service. Between 1946 and 1953, he served in the Atlantic and Pacific fleets. He worked with the Navy's early nuclear submarine program. During this time, he worked at Chalk River Laboratories in Canada. He led a maintenance crew to help shut down a reactor after a partial meltdown. This experience with nuclear energy influenced his future views on atomic power. After his father died in 1953, Carter left active duty to run the family peanut farm.

Carter entered politics to address social and regional issues. He was one of the first "New South" governors. This term refers to leaders committed to desegregation, or ending the separation of people by race. He served in the state senate and chaired the Education Committee. He helped pass bills to expand funding for statewide education. In 1976, Carter ran for president as a "dark horse" candidate. This means he was a little-known candidate who surprised everyone by winning. He narrowly defeated the Republican incumbent, Gerald Ford, in the general election.

He also worked closely with Habitat for Humanity to build homes for those in need. One of his greatest successes was helping to eradicate dracunculiasis, a neglected tropical disease. His extensive work for peace and human rights earned him the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.
