He lived and worked in New York City during the 1920s and 1930s. Schultz made a huge fortune through organized crime. He was involved in bootlegging, which was the illegal sale of alcohol. He also ran a numbers racket, which was a type of illegal gambling. His life was filled with crime and conflict with other groups.

Schultz grew his business in many different ways. In the mid-1920s, he worked as a bouncer at a club. He soon became a partner with a man named Joey Noe. Together, they opened many illegal drinking spots around the Bronx. They used their own trucks to move beer from New Jersey. Schultz often rode in the trucks to guard them from thieves. This work made him very wealthy during the Prohibition era.

His career was marked by many violent gang wars. He fought against the Irish mob led by Jack "Legs" Diamond. These fights were often very deadly and changed the city. Schultz also had trouble with people inside his own gang. A man named Vincent Coll wanted to take over Schultz's territory. This led to a bloody war between their two crews. These conflicts showed how dangerous the world of organized crime was.

Schultz also used different methods to make money. He worked with Jules Modgilewsky to extort money from restaurants. They forced owners to join a special association. If owners refused, they faced strikes or attacks. Schultz also faced many legal battles with the law. A lawyer named Thomas Dewey tried to convict him for tax evasion. Schultz even tried to act like a good citizen in small towns to win over juries.

In the end, Schultz lost his power and his life. He had many enemies among other crime leaders. One famous leader was Charles "Lucky" Luciano. Schultz asked the Commission for permission to kill Dewey, but they said no. Because he disobeyed them, the Commission ordered his murder in 1935. He was shot at a restaurant in Newark, New Jersey. He died the very next day.
