Dox was a very important writer from the island of Madagascar. His real name was Jean Verdi Salomon Razakandraina. He was much more than just a poet. He was also a painter, a musician, and a person who wrote plays. He even translated famous books from French and English into the Malagasy language. People in his country love his work very much. Since Madagascar became independent in 1960, students of all ages study his writing in school.

Dox learned many things from his family when he was young. His grandfather taught him how to paint and play music. He also taught him many old stories and proverbs. Proverbs are short, wise sayings that people use to teach lessons. These lessons helped Dox grow to love the beautiful countryside of Madagascar. Later, he went to a school called the École des Beaux-Arts. It was there that his friends gave him the nickname "Dox."

As he grew up, Dox wanted to help protect his culture. He joined a group of poets called Mitady ny very. This name means "search for lost values." They wanted to celebrate what it meant to be Malagasy. In 1941, he printed his first big collection of poems called Ny Hirako. Dox also wrote many plays about folk tales and history. He wrote sixteen plays in total. Some of these plays used stories from the Bible.

Dox was a very busy creator throughout his whole life. He wrote nine different collections of poems. He also wrote many books of prose, which is ordinary writing. In 1952, he helped start a group called the Union of Malagasy Poets and Writers. He also helped start Tsiry to help young people publish their own art. He even wrote songs that became very famous. He worked with many musical stars to make these songs.

Many people compare Dox to famous poets from other lands. Some people even call him the "Verlaine or Baudelaire of Madagascar." This means they think his talent was truly great. He used his art to speak for people who did not have a voice. He wrote about everyday life and the beauty of his home. His work showed that the Malagasy language could be used for any kind of story. Even today, his songs and poems remain classics in his country.
