Ny Avana Ramanantoanina was a famous writer from Madagascar. He was a gifted poet and a playwright. He is known as one of the most celebrated artists in his country. Most people remember him for his beautiful poetry. He also wrote many stories and plays. He wrote mostly in the Malagasy language. He wanted his words to reach the hearts of his people.

His writing style was very special. He used a traditional form called hainteny. This style helped him share deep feelings. He used embona, which is a feeling of nostalgia. He also used hanina, which means a sense of longing. He used these feelings to bring Malagasy people together. He hoped they would return to their traditional values. His work helped create a new way to write poetry.

He was born in 1891 in Ambatofotsy. This is a suburb of Antananarivo in central Madagascar. His family belonged to the Merina aristocracy. This group lost its power when France took control in 1896. At age 16, he began publishing his work. He used the pen name Ny Avana. This name means rainbow in Malagasy. His 1907 book, Chant de fiancailles, made him very popular.

Life was not always easy for him. He lived during the time of French colonial rule. He was part of a secret group called Vy Vato Sakelika. Because of this, the French authorities sent him away in 1917. He was exiled to Mayotte in the Comoros. During this time, his writings were even banned. He could not be reprinted until the 1980s. After he returned in 1922, he worked as a clerk in a book shop.

He remained a very important leader for writers. He helped start a movement called Mitady ny Very. This means Search for Lost Values. In 1931, he launched a journal called Fandrosoam-baovao. This means New Progress. He started it with writers Jean-Joseph Rabearivelo and Charles Rajoelisolo. He died in Antananarivo in 1940. Today, a street in the capital city is named after him. He is a hero of Malagasy history.
