Have you ever heard a siren change sound?

As a car comes near, the sound seems high. As it moves away, the sound seems low. This is called the Doppler effect. It was named after Christian Doppler. He first described it in 1842.

This happens because of how waves move.

When a sound source moves toward you, the waves bunch up. This makes the pitch sound higher. When the source moves away, the waves spread out. This makes the pitch sound lower.

Scientists use this idea in many ways. Astronomers look at light from far stars. They see a redshift, which means light looks redder. This shows a star is moving away.

Police use radar guns to catch speeding cars. The radar sends out waves to find speed. Doctors also use it to see blood flow. They use ultrasound to check how blood moves in the heart.
