He is best known for his adventures featuring Scrooge McDuck and other Disney characters. Many of his stories use worlds first created by the artist Carl Barks. Rosa has a deep love for these characters and their history. He created about 90 stories between 1987 and 2006. One of his most famous works is a 12-chapter series called "The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck." This long story won him an Eisner Award for Best Serialized Story in 1995.

Rosa has a very special way of making his art. He did not go to school for drawing. Instead, he earned a degree in civil engineering in 1973. Because of this, he uses engineering tools to draw his comics. He uses technical pens and templates to make his lines. Most artists draw their pictures freehand, but Rosa uses these tools for precision. This helps him add a huge amount of detail to every page. He often draws twelve small boxes, called panels, on a single page.

His career began long before he drew for Disney. In 1971, he wrote a comic strip called "The Pertwillaby Papers" for his college newspaper. He also created a superhero character named Captain Kentucky. This character was a secret identity for a man named Lancelot Pertwillaby. Rosa drew this strip for the Louisville Times from 1979 to 1982. He only made $25 per week for his hard work. He eventually decided to stop drawing these characters for a few years. Later, a publisher called Gladstone Comics helped him start his Disney career.

Rosa's work is incredibly popular in many parts of the world. He is even more famous in Europe than in the United States. In Finland, his stories caused a huge sensation. He wrote a special 32-page story called "The Quest for Kalevala." This adventure was based on the Kalevala, which is a famous Finnish epic tale.

He also works with a publisher in Denmark called Egmont. He has even worked with a French magazine named Picsou. These publishers help share his detailed stories with readers everywhere.

Life is busy for Don Rosa outside of his drawing desk. He is a collector of many different things. He collects comic books, movie magazines, and even pinball machines. He also loves nature and has a private preserve with forest trails. He spends time growing exotic chili plants on his land. Rosa has also faced hard times with his health. He had serious eye surgery in 2008 that made drawing much harder. Despite these challenges, his art remains a major part of comic history.
