He was loved for his strong storytelling and his deep research into history. He did not just draw adventures; he made them feel real by studying the past. This talent earned him many honors, like the Grand Prix de la ville d'Angoulême. In 2005, he was even placed in the Will Eisner Award Hall of Fame. His work helped change how people saw the art of comics.

Pratt's life was full of movement and many different cultures. He was born in Rimini, Italy, to Rolando and Evelina Prat. As a child, he lived in Venice with a family from many places. His grandfather was English and Provençal, his other grandfather was of Jewish descent, and his grandmother was Turkish. In 1937, he moved to Ethiopia with his mother. Later, he lived in Argentina, London, France, and Switzerland.

These travels gave him many ideas for his art.

Creating a comic book was a careful job for Pratt. He often wrote the stories and drew the pictures himself. For example, he wrote and illustrated a book called "Ann of the Jungle." He used his research to make sure every detail looked correct. He studied real historical eras, such as the 1755 war in Ticonderoga. He also wrote about colonial wars in Africa and both world wars. This made his worlds feel like places that actually existed.

His most famous creation is a character named Corto Maltese. This hero first appeared in a story called "A Ballad of the Salty Sea" in 1967. Corto was a complex character shaped by Pratt's own travels. The stories were so popular that they were translated into fifteen different languages. Pratt also worked on other series like "The Scorpions of the Desert." Some of his characters were even based on real historical people, like Rasputin.

Many people still look at Pratt's work today. Even after he died in 1995, his stories continued to live on. New artists have even drawn new volumes for "The Scorpions of the Desert." In 2015, a special English edition of Corto Maltese was released. Filmmakers have also made documentaries to tell the story of his life.
