Franco Modigliani was a very important expert on money and markets.

He was born in Rome, Italy, on June 18, 1918. His father was a doctor for children. His mother worked to help people in her community. He grew up in a Jewish family. Modigliani studied very hard at a big university in Rome. He even won a prize for his work in economics when he was young.

Life changed for Modigliani when he moved to new places. In 1938, he left Italy to live in Paris. This was a difficult time because of unfair laws in his home country. Later, he moved to the United States in 1939. He went to a school called the New School for Social Research. He worked hard to earn his Ph.D. in 1944. He became a citizen of the United States in 1946.

Modigliani had many big ideas that changed how we see money. One was the life-cycle hypothesis. This idea explains why people save money. He said people try to spend a steady amount of money throughout their whole lives. They save money while they are working. Then, they spend those savings when they retire. He also helped create the Modigliani–Miller theorem in 1958. This theorem helps explain how companies use money to grow.

He was a very busy teacher at many famous schools. He taught at Columbia University and Bard College. He also worked at the University of Illinois. Later, he spent many years at Carnegie Mellon University. Finally, he became a professor at MIT. He loved his students very much. He kept teaching even in the very last months of his life.

Because his work was so helpful, he won the Nobel Prize in Economics in 1985. This is one of the highest honors in the world. He won it for his studies on saving and financial markets. He also worked with his granddaughter, Leah, on a way to measure investments. Modigliani lived a long and full life. He died in 2003 at the age of 85. His ideas still help people understand the world of money today.
