Franco Modigliani was a famous expert on money. He was born in Rome, Italy, in 1918. He studied at a university in Rome. Later, he moved to the United States. He became a citizen of the U.S. in 1946.

Modigliani had many big ideas. He created the life-cycle hypothesis. This idea explains why people save money. He said people save while they work. Then, they spend that money when they retire. He also worked with Merton Miller. Together, they made the Modigliani–Miller theorem. This helps people understand how companies use money.

He taught at many great schools. He worked at MIT and Carnegie Mellon. He loved to teach. He taught even in his last months of life. In 1985, he won the Nobel Prize in Economics. This is a very high honor. It was for his work on saving and markets. He died in 2003 at the age of 85. He left behind a world that understands money much better.
