He is most celebrated for his work on Disney comic books. Barks was the writer and artist for the very first Donald Duck stories. He also created the famous, wealthy character Scrooge McDuck. Many people call him "The Duck Man" or "The Good Duck Artist." Some experts even say he was the most popular artist-writer in the world.

He was once inducted into the Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame.

Barks learned a lot from the many hard jobs he held. Before he was a professional artist, he worked as a farmer and a cowboy. He also worked as a woodcutter, a mule driver, and a printer. These jobs taught him how people and machines can be stubborn or unpredictable. He noticed that people often use humor to get through tough times. Barks used this idea of humor in his own stories. He liked to show the funny side of life's many disappointments.

His life experiences helped him create his most famous characters. Donald Duck's habit of moving from job to job came from Barks's own life. Donald often faces temporary success followed by sudden failure. Scrooge McDuck was written to be different from Donald. Scrooge faced many hard times in his past, too. However, Scrooge used intelligence and hard work to become very rich. He famously said he was "tougher than the toughies."

Barks began his career at Walt Disney Productions in 1935. He started with a low salary of 20 dollars a week. His first job was as an inbetweener. This meant he drew the pictures between the main poses to show movement. He was very good at creating funny ideas for stories. By 1937, he moved to the story department. He helped create many cartoons, such as "Donald's Nephews" in 1938.

Barks created a whole world for these characters to live in. He invented the city of Duckburg and many of its people. He created Gladstone Gander in 1948 and the Beagle Boys in 1951. Other characters include Gyro Gearloose and Magica De Spell. His stories often featured exciting treasure hunts. These ideas later helped inspire animated shows like "DuckTales." Even today, his work remains a primary source for new adventures.
