It is the fifth-longest river in Europe. The river starts in the town of Novomoskovsk. From there, it flows 1,870 kilometres. It ends at the Sea of Azov.

Many people have lived near the Don. Long ago, Slavic nomads lived in the area. Later, the Don Cossacks settled in the valley. The river was also good for trade. People from the Byzantine Empire used it to trade. Some ancient Greeks even thought the river was a border. They thought it sat between Europe and Asia.

The river has many parts. One main tributary is the Seversky Donets. This river flows through Ukraine. A big city called Rostov-on-Don sits on the river.

There is also a way to connect two rivers. The Volga-Don Canal joins the Don to the Volga. This canal is 101 kilometres long. It is deep enough for big ships. There are also dams and locks on the river. These locks help ships move through the water.
