For a long time, it served as the center of power for the Republic of Venice. It held government offices and a jail inside its walls. The palace was also the home for the Doge. The Doge was the elected leader of the city.

Building the palace was a task that took many centuries. The very first version was built in the year 810.

Later, a fire set by rebels destroyed much of that early building. Doge Sebastiano Ziani helped rebuild the palace in the late 1100s. In 1340, workers started a new Gothic construction. This new work focused on the side facing the lagoon. By 1424, Doge Francesco Foscari added more wings to the structure. These additions included law courts and a beautiful open arcade.

Many fires changed how the palace looks today. A violent fire broke out in 1483 near the Doge's rooms. This led to new work by an architect named Antonio Rizzo. He brought a new Renaissance style to the building. Another huge fire happened in 1547 and damaged the second floor. A third major fire in 1577 destroyed the Great Council Chamber. These disasters meant the palace was always being repaired. Architects had to decide whether to fix it or change it. They chose to mostly respect the original Gothic style.

Inside the palace, you can find many amazing things. The courtyard is a central part of the building.
