In the Philippines, some groups use it in rituals. These are special ceremonies. The Cordillera people use it in a ritual called dao-es. They believe dogs have very pure souls. They use the ritual to cleanse the mind. In Hawaii, people once raised the Hawaiian Poi Dog for food. That breed is now extinct.

History shows people also ate dog meat to survive. During wars or famines, food was often hard to find. In the 1800s, explorers like Lewis and Clark ate dog meat. This helped them stay alive on long trips. In the cold South Pole, Roald Amundsen used his sled dogs for food. This helped his team carry less weight. This choice helped him win his race to the pole.
