society Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A divorce is a legal way to end a marriage. It is often called a dissolution of marriage. In most places, a court must approve the divorce. The court helps people settle important tasks. They decide how to share property and money. They also decide how to care for children. This includes child support and visiting time.

There are two main ways to get a divorce. Some places use fault-based divorce. In these places, one person must prove the other did something wrong. They might claim things like cruelty or being unfaithful. Other places use no-fault divorce. In these places, people can separate for any reason. They do not have to prove anyone is at fault.

Laws change as society changes. Many countries have new laws now. For example, the UK changed its laws in 2022. Now, people do not have to blame a spouse to end a marriage. Most people can marry again after a divorce. However, some places do not allow divorce. The Philippines and Vatican City are two such places. In the Philippines, divorce is not legal for most people.
