Division (mathematics)

math Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Division is a way to split things into equal parts. It is one of the four basic ways we use math. You might use it to share snacks or measure things. When we divide, we are looking for how many times one number fits inside another.

This is called the quotient. The number you start with is the dividend. The number you divide by is the divisor. These three parts work together to solve the puzzle.

There are two main ways to think about this work. One way is called quotition. This asks how many fives you must add to get twenty. The other way is called partition. This asks how many apples go into each group if you split twenty apples into five parts. Sometimes, numbers do not split perfectly. If you divide twenty-one apples by four, everyone gets five apples. One apple is left over, and we call this the remainder.

People have used different symbols for division for a long time. One sign is the obelus, which looks like a line with a dot above and below it.

A Swiss mathematician named Johann Rahn used this in 1659. Another person, Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, used a colon in 1684. You might also see a slash or a long horizontal line. In science, people often put one number over another using a fraction bar. These symbols all help us show how to share or split numbers.

Math can be done in many ways without a computer. You can use an abacus to help you divide. Some people use a slide rule by lining up numbers on different scales. Long division is a method used with a pencil and paper. If the divisor is small, you can use short division instead. Even computers use methods that are similar to long division. They just do the work much faster than a person can.

Division is different from adding or multiplying. For example, the order of numbers matters in division. If you change the order, you get a different answer. This means division is not commutative. It is also not associative, which means the order of steps matters. You must be careful when dividing by zero. In math, dividing by zero is not defined, so it has no answer. This keeps the rules of math working correctly.
