Subtraction is a way to show how much is left when we take things away. It is one of the four main ways we use math.

When you remove items from a group, you are performing an operation. You might start with five peaches and take two away. This leaves you with three peaches remaining. The final amount is called the difference.

This math idea is the opposite of addition. If you add two numbers together, you can subtract to return to your starting point.

There are special names for the parts of a subtraction problem. These names come from Latin words. The number you start with is called the minuend. The number you take away is called the subtrahend. The word subtrahend comes from the Latin word for "thing to be subtracted."

The final answer is always called the difference. You can also see subtraction used in stores. A shop in Bordeaux might use a sign to show a price cut.

This helps customers see how much the price has decreased.

Subtraction follows some very specific patterns. It is called anticommutative. This means if you change the order of the numbers, the sign of the answer changes. For example, four minus six gives a negative two. If you switch them, the result is different. Subtraction is also not associative. This means the order you use when subtracting many numbers matters. If you do the math in a different order, you might get a different answer. You must follow a set order of operations to be correct.

We can use a number line to see how subtraction works. Imagine a line with numbers on it.

Moving to the right on the line is like adding. Moving to the left is like subtracting. If you start at three and move two steps left, you reach one. If you move three steps left, you reach zero. To go even further left, you must use negative numbers. This allows you to subtract numbers that are larger than the one you started with.

Different schools teach subtraction in different ways. In the United States, many students use a method called regrouping. This is also known as the decomposition algorithm. Teachers often use markings called crutches to help students remember the steps.

In Europe, some schools use the Austrian method. This is also called the addition method. In this version, there is no borrowing. Instead, the student increases the subtrahend to find the answer. Both ways help students break big numbers into smaller, easier parts.
