Multiplication

Multiplication is a fundamental way to group numbers together. It is one of the four main ways we use math, along with addition, subtraction, and division. You can think of it as a way to scale something up.

When you multiply, you are often adding the same number over and over. For example, if you have four bags with three marbles in each, you have twelve marbles total.

The numbers you use to multiply are called factors. The answer you get from the math is called the product.

There are many ways to write down a multiplication problem. In school, you might use a cross symbol like this: 3 × 4. In the United States, many people use a small dot in the middle of the line.

In computer programming, people often use an asterisk symbol instead. This started because old computers did not have a special multiplication sign on their keyboards. In algebra, you might see numbers sitting right next to letters without any symbol at all. This is called juxtaposition, and it means the numbers are being multiplied together. It is important to know which symbol is being used so the math stays clear.

One of the most helpful rules in math is the commutative property. This rule says that the order of the factors does not change the product. It does not matter if you add three groups of four or four groups of three. You will get the same answer of twelve both times. This works for many types of numbers, including fractions and even negative numbers. When you multiply a positive number by a negative number, the answer is negative. However, if you multiply two negative numbers together, the answer becomes positive. This makes math very predictable and steady.

People have been finding ways to multiply for thousands of years. Ancient Egyptians used a method that involved doubling numbers and adding them up.

Long ago, people used tools like the slide rule to multiply quickly. In the early 1900s, even toys like The Educated Monkey helped people learn.

This was a little tin toy that could show multiplication results. Later, mechanical calculators were built to handle much larger numbers. Today, most people use electronic calculators or computers to do these hard jobs.

Multiplication connects to many things you see in the real world. You can use it to find the area of a rectangle. If you multiply the length of the sides, you find the space inside. This is a new kind of measurement called area. Multiplication also works with very advanced ideas like vectors and complex numbers.

In these advanced types of math, the rules can sometimes change. For example, in some types of math called matrices, the order of the numbers actually does matter. Even so, the basic idea of grouping stays the same.
