Multiplication is a fast way to count. You can think of it as adding the same group many times.

Imagine you have four bags. Each bag has three marbles inside. Instead of counting one by one, you can multiply. Four groups of three make twelve marbles in all.

The numbers you multiply are called factors. The answer you get is called a product.

You can also use multiplication to find the area of a shape. If you have a rectangle, you can multiply its sides to find the space inside.

It does not matter which factor comes first. Adding three groups of four is the same as four groups of three. This is a special rule. It means the result stays the same no matter the order.

People have used different ways to multiply for a long time. Ancient Egyptians used a way with doubling. In the past, people used tools like the slide rule. Today, we use electronic calculators to do the work for us.
