Division is a way to split things into equal parts.

Imagine you have twenty apples. You want to share them with four people. Each person gets five apples. In math, the number you start with is the dividend. The number you divide by is the divisor. The answer you find is the quotient.

Sometimes, things do not split perfectly. If you have twenty-one apples for four people, everyone gets five apples. But one apple is left over. This leftover part is called a remainder. You can also write division as a fraction. This lets you share that last bit fairly. For example, you could give everyone five and a quarter apples.

There are many ways to show division. You might see a slash (/) or a long line. A special sign called an obelus (÷) is also used.

This sign was used by Johann Rahn in 1659. Some people also use a colon (:) to show division. You can use paper and pencil for long division. Computers use even faster ways to solve these problems.
