She spent her life exploring style and beauty. She worked for important magazines like Harper's Bazaar and Vogue. People often called her a leader in the fashion world. In 1964, she joined the International Best Dressed List Hall of Fame. Later, she worked as a special consultant for the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Her work helped many people see fashion as a form of art.

Diana had a very creative way of working. At Harper's Bazaar, she wrote a column called "Why Don't You...?" This column gave readers wild and imaginative suggestions. For example, she once asked why someone wouldn't wash a child's hair in champagne. She also had a talent for finding new stars. She helped the model Lauren Bacall become famous during World War II. Diana directed a special photo shoot for Bacall near a Red Cross office. She believed that fashion should always offer a strong point of view.

Her life began in Paris in 1903. She was the daughter of an American mother and a British father. Her family lived in Paris before moving to New York City during World War I. As a young girl, she studied dancing with famous teachers like Michel Fokine. She even performed at Carnegie Hall in a dance called Gavotte. In 1924, she married a banker named Thomas Reed Vreeland. They had two sons named Tim and Frecky. Their lives took them from New York to London and back again.

Diana's career reached new heights in the 1960s. She became the editor-in-chief of Vogue in 1963. During this time, she celebrated people who were unique. She famously said that having a bump on your nose did not matter if you had good carriage. She also encouraged designers to be bold. When designer Rudi Gernreich showed her a topless swimsuit idea, she told him to make it. She loved bright and unusual ideas, like stockings that were the color of baby pigs. She was known for spending a lot of money to make her ideas real.

Diana's influence reached even the most powerful people. She gave style advice to First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy. She helped connect the First Lady with the designer Oleg Cassini. Even though she was very successful, she did not earn a huge salary at Harper's Bazaar. She earned about $18,000 a year for a long time. Her life was full of travel and beautiful places. Today, people still study her work and her many big ideas. A documentary called "The Eye Has to Travel" tells her story.
