She wrote many types of works, including poems and radio plays. Her writing often explored deep human feelings and history. Many people admired her because she could turn hard experiences into art. She became a very important voice in European literature. Her books and stories are still read by many people today.

Writing was a way for Ilse to process her life. She often used a style called surrealism to tell her stories. This means her writing could feel like a dream or something unusual. One famous story is "Spiegelgeschichte," which is written backwards. It begins at the end of a woman's life and moves to her childhood. This unique way of telling a story makes the reader think deeply. She also wrote a famous novel called "The Greater Hope" in 1948.

Ilse's life changed greatly during the years of World War II. She was born in Vienna in 1921 to a Jewish mother and a teacher father. Because of her Jewish ancestry, she faced many hard times under the Nazi regime. She was not allowed to go to school like she wanted. Instead, she had to work as a laborer in a button factory. She even worked to hide her mother in a small room. During this time, many of her relatives were lost in camps.

After the war ended in 1945, Ilse began a busy career. She first studied medicine at the University of Vienna. Later, she left her studies to focus on her writing. In 1951, she joined a group called Gruppe 47. This group wanted to spread democratic ideas in Austria. In 1952, she won their prize for best text. She was the very first woman to receive this honor. She also joined the Academy of Arts in Berlin in 1956.

Ilse's life shows how art can connect to the real world. Her stories are often compared to the work of a writer named Kafka. However, many people say her work focuses more on human emotions. She married the poet Günter Eich in 1953, and they had two children. She spent many years teaching and helping other writers grow. Ilse Aichinger lived a long life and died in 2016 at age 95. Her legacy lives on through the many prizes she won and the books she left behind.
