He writes about art for New York magazine. He also writes many books. Before he became a critic, he was a long distance truck driver. He did this job until he was 41 years old. Saltz loves to find stories in art. When he was a boy, he visited the Art Institute of Chicago. He felt that art had its own special language. He wanted to learn that language to know every story. Now, he looks for what art says about being alive.

Saltz has a unique way of looking at art. He does not just look for technical skill. He wants to see how artists rethink the world. He thinks an artist is like an engineer building rockets from rocks. He looks for what the artist is trying to say. He also looks at what the work reveals about our society. Saltz even calls himself a "goalie" in his writing. This means he thinks art must be very good to pass him.
