Walcott felt that writing was a special calling. He even said that poetry was like a way to pray.

Walcott used many different ways to create art. He was a trained painter who studied under Harold Simmons. He admired famous artists like Cézanne and Giorgione. His paintings were even shown in a New York gallery in 2007. As a writer, he worked with great focus and silence. He said that writing required a quiet withdrawal from the world. This helped him find a sense of joy and gratitude.

He wanted his work to feel like a blessing to others.

His journey as a writer began very early in life. At age 14, he published a poem in a local newspaper. By age 19, he published his first two books of poems. His mother helped him pay two hundred dollars to print them. He sold the copies to his friends to earn the money back.

Later, he moved to Trinidad in 1953 to work as a teacher and journalist. In 1959, he started the Trinidad Theatre Workshop to share stories through plays.

Walcott won many of the world's most important awards. In 1992, he received the Nobel Prize in Literature. He was only the second writer from the Caribbean to win it.

His long poem Omeros, published in 1990, is considered his greatest work. He also won the T. S. Eliot Prize in 2010 for White Egrets. Other awards included the Obie Award and the OCM Bocas Prize. He was even made a knight in Saint Lucia in 2016.

His work connects the history of the Caribbean to the whole world. He wrote about the struggle of being colonized by other lands. He used stories of shipwrecks to show how people can start again. His plays, like Dream on Monkey Mountain, look at how people live after colonial rule. He also taught at Boston University for over twenty years. He made friends with other great poets like Seamus Heaney. Walcott helped people see the beauty and the truth of his home.
