Dental braces are special tools used to straighten teeth. They help teeth fit together in a healthy way.

Braces can fix many different issues. They can fix gaps or crooked teeth. They also help with things like overbites, underbites, or cross bites. Some people use braces to improve how their jaw works. Others use them just to make their smile look better.

Braces can be used for health or for looks.

How do these tools actually move your teeth? It happens through constant force and pressure.

First, a doctor attaches small pieces called brackets to each tooth. Then, a metal wire called an archwire is placed through the brackets. Small elastic bands, or ligatures, hold the wire in place. The wire pushes against the brackets to move the teeth. This pressure causes a process called bone remodelling. The body actually makes new bone to support the teeth in their new spots. This must happen slowly so the teeth stay safe.

Getting braces is a careful process done by a trained doctor. In North America, most people see an orthodontist. These are dentists who spent two or three extra years studying how to fix teeth and jaws.

First, the doctor looks at your teeth and takes X-rays. They might even make a 3D digital model of your mouth using a laser scanner. If you need space for your teeth, the doctor might use spacers to move teeth apart. They might also use an expander to make the dental arch wider. Sometimes, a doctor may even need to remove a tooth to make room.

There are many different types of braces you might see. Traditional metal braces are very common and use stainless steel.

Some people have allergies to nickel, so they might use gold-plated steel or titanium instead. Titanium is light and very strong. There are also self-ligating braces that do not need small rubber bands. If you want braces to be hard to see, you can choose clear braces or lingual braces. Lingual braces are special because they are attached to the back of the teeth. Some people even use clear removable aligners to move their teeth.

Treatment can take anywhere from six months to two and a half years. Every few weeks, you will visit the doctor for an adjustment.

The doctor will change the wires or the colorful elastic bands. Once the braces are finally removed, the work is not quite done. You will likely need to wear a retainer to keep your teeth straight. A retainer is often a clear plate that fits over your teeth. Most people wear them for about six months after their braces come off. This stops the teeth from moving back to their old spots.
