For patients who had long or difficult treatments, a fixative wire might be attached to the back of the teeth. This provides extra support to ensure the teeth stay straight. Some patients may also need a gum lift or a fiberotomy to improve the gumline before using a retainer.
Modern orthodontics continues to evolve with new technologies. Customized orthodontic systems now combine 3-D imaging with treatment planning software. Some systems even use a robot to custom-bend the archwire for the patient. Additionally, modern archwires often use nickel-titanium or temperature-sensitive materials. These wires are limp and flexible when cold, making them easy to thread through brackets. Once they reach body temperature, they stiffen and apply a constant, light force to the teeth. This combination of biology and technology allows for more efficient and comfortable results.
