Denis Fonvizin was a famous Russian writer and playwright. He helped start a new way of writing funny plays in Russia. These plays are called comedies. He used a style called satire to make fun of people. Satire uses humor to show what is wrong with society. His stories were very popular during the Age of Enlightenment. Even today, people still act out his plays on stages.

Writing a satire involves many careful steps. Fonvizin would choose a person or a group to mock. He would then create characters that showed their bad habits. For example, his play The Brigadier-General poked fun at people who tried to act too French. His most famous play is called The Minor. In that play, he showed how some country people were rude and uneducated. One character, Mitrofanushka, was so selfish that he was even mean to his own mother.

Fonvizin had a very interesting family history. He was born in Moscow to a noble family. He was the first of eight children. His father, Ivan Fonvizin, was a state official. His mother, Ekaterina, came from a very important family. Even his ancestors had a long history. One ancestor was a Baron named Berndt von Wiesen. Over many years, the family name changed to Fonvizin.

Many specific facts define his life and career. He studied at the Imperial Moscow University. Later, he worked as a secretary for Count Nikita Panin. This job gave him protection to write his critical plays. Between 1777 and 1778, he traveled to France. He wrote a book called Letters from France about his trip. He lived much of his life in the service of the Russian Empire. He died in Saint Petersburg in 1792.

His work changed how people thought about Russian literature. He did not copy French writers like Molière. Instead, he studied a Danish writer named Ludvig Holberg. Fonvizin read Holberg's plays in German. Because his plays were so good, they left a lasting mark. Some lines from The Minor became common proverbs. Even the famous writer Alexander Pushkin used Fonvizin's characters in his own books.
