Fonvizin wrote funny plays called comedies. He used these plays to make fun of people. This kind of writing is called satire. One play was called The Brigadier-General. It poked fun at people who tried too hard to be French. His most famous play was The Minor. It was about rude and selfish people in the country. A character named Mitrofanushka was very selfish. He was even mean to his own mother.

People loved his work. Some lines from his plays became common sayings. Even the great writer Alexander Pushkin used his ideas. Fonvizin worked in the civil service too.
