He lived during the Russian Enlightenment. This was a time for new ideas. People wanted to learn more about the world. Novikov worked hard to help the public learn. He is often called the first Russian journalist. He wanted to raise the level of culture in Russia. He believed that books could change lives.

Novikov had many ways to share his ideas. He edited a paper called the Moscow Gazette. He also started journals like Zhivopisets. These journals used satire to talk about life. Satire is a way of using humor to show truths. He also worked with a large printing house. His press was very busy and successful. It produced one third of all Russian books at the time. He even worked to share the plays of William Shakespeare.

Novikov was part of a new generation of thinkers. He studied at Moscow University after it opened in 1755. He was a very active person in his country. In 1767, he helped in the Legislative Assembly. This group tried to create a new code of laws. He also brought new beliefs to Russia. He worked with men like Johann Georg Schwarz and Ivan Lopukhin. They brought ideas like martinism and rosicrucianism to the people.

He was part of the Freemasons. This group gave him money for his big book projects. However, things changed when the French Revolution started. Catherine the Great changed how she felt about him. The state took his printing house away from him. In 1787, he was sent to Shlisselburg Fortress. He stayed in that prison for 15 years.

Many things were lost during his time in prison. The state destroyed much of his printed work. They even pulped 1,000 copies of a book by Edward Young. This book was called The Last Day. Eventually, Emperor Paul set Novikov free.
